What is Ferritin test?

Ferritin test is crucial to determine the amount of iron in your blood. To carry oxygen to cells, iron in RBC plays an important role. By lacking of iron, RBC can’t supply enough oxygen according to your body needs. Increase in iron level also causes major problems to your body.

Ferritin is not same as iron in blood. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron and releases when your body needs it to carry oxygen. Usually Ferritin remain in blood, very little amount circulating in your blood. Ferritin contains around 20 percent of iron. The cells in liver and immune system are having greatest concentrations of ferritin. Body’s cells stores ferritin until more red blood cells are formed and it signal the cells to release ferritin. After getting signal, ferritin then binds to transferrin protein. With the help of these two protein iron is transported to newly formed RBC.

You can simply imagine that transferrin is the dedicated taxi, ferritin is the driver, and together they lift iron. By getting help from these two protein iron is able to reach its destination called newly formed RBC.
